Swimwear Back Shapes and Styles
The back shape of a swimsuit can determine the fit and the performance of a suit. A more cut away swimsuit back is better for swimmers who don't want to create drag, and where speed is important. A closed, more covered, back style would be preferable to a swimmer who does not want their back on show. Below each style of back is detailed, and you can link through to a category of just that style of swimsuit on UK Swim Store.
Open Back Swim Suits
The definition of an open back swimsuit is one that has any size hole in the back shape, that the back can be seen through. The hole or keyhole gives the swimsuit a better fit to the curve of the back. It does mean that the back is exposed through the hole, however, which does not suit all swimmers.
Closed Back Swimwear
The description of a closed back swimsuit is one that does not have a hole or key hole in the design. Closed back swimsuits tend to give more coverage at the back, and so are more modest.
Sports Back Swim Suits
A sports back swimsuit typically has straps that start in the middle of the back and then separate to go up over the shoulders. This style of straps allows for a fit where the swimsuit straps do not fall off the shoulder of the swimmer, making it more of a style used in sportier designs of swimsuit.
Adjustable Straps Swimwear
Swimsuits with adjustable straps allow the swimmer to get a great fit up top. Just like with a bra strap, the strap can be adjusted to give more or less length.
Clip Back Swimsuits
This section shows all the clip back swimsuits we sell. Clip backs allow the swimmer to unclip the back opening, making the swimsuit easier to get on.
Cross Back Swimsuits
Cross back suits are also a racing style of back. A more exposed back shape with just the straps crossing at the back. Ideal for getting just the right fit with minimal drag.
Scooped Back Swimsuits
Still a closed back swimsuit, but with a lower scoop at the back. Can be extremely flattering and great for a sun tan.
High Back Swimsuits
An ideal suit for the more modest swimmer, or for the swimmer who doesn’t want straps. The back is completely covered and the suit may have a zip at the back.
